The Wonderful World of Butterfly Farms

For Easter, Mom gave Tanner and Brenna Butterfly Farms. They were very excited even though they didn't really know what the farms were for. We sent off for the caterpillars and waited several weeks for them to arrive. They finally came in a little box. There were five caterpillars that were crawling around in a tub of nasty looking food. Brenna could not have been more excited. They stayed in their caterpillar form for several days. Brenna loved looking at them, talking to them, and also reading to them. It was so funny to watch her drag her stool over to the dresser and pick up book after book. She showed them the pictures and "read" the stories as she remembered them to go. The favored book was "Bug Stew". Ironically it was a book were Timon and Pumba teach Simba how to gather all kinds of bugs to make a delicious stew. Not sure the caterpillars really appreciated that story.

Well, they finally turned into cocoons and I have been watching them to see the change into butterflies happen. Yesterday morning, I noticed that they were shaking and thought it would happen soon. I passed by the farm in the afternoon and saw four beautiful butterflies flying around in their home. Brenna was so excited. She laughed and giggled as the "played" together. She helped me feed them sugar water and oranges. She talked to them and counted them all evening and as soon as she got up this morning. This has been a great present. I think we will order more caterpillars again sometime.

I am a little concerned how Brenna will manage letting her new friends go. I will have to do some fancy talking to convince her that they will be so happy free.
